Conclusion

Congratulations on your exhibition!  It will be a useful tool for all of us as we think about people in history, geography, and the fundamental ideas in mathematics.  We can look at the timeline and see how civilizations and ideas relate to each other in time.

You have researched middle school math topics as they were first developed and used in ancient civilizations.  You have compared your understanding of a math concept with an ancient civilization's understanding of that same concept. You may have learned why this concept was needed.  What problem did it solve?  Did it help the ancient people in a practical way?

Can you imagine life without place value or zero?  How would we manipulate big numbers and calculations?

Did you ever wonder what life would be like without a formal understanding of mathematics?

During the research for this Web Quest, websites about the origins of fractions were few.  Those that were found did not seem appropriate for middle school math students.

Challenge:  Do your own web search for suitable links to the history of fractions.

Big Question:  Are mathematical concepts inventions or discoveries?
