Introduction

"A myth is a traditional story whose author is unknown. It has its roots in the primitive folk-beliefs of cultures and uses the supernatural to interpret natural events and to explain a culture's view of the universe and the nature of humanity" (Moncrieff).

Myths can be found in all cultures in the world with one of the most common forms being the creation myth. People of all religions and belief systems use their creation myth to describe the beginning of the Earth and its inhabitants.  When using the term "myth" in relation to studying the creation of a culture our goal is to use it respectfully.  As a result, keep in mind the following explanation by Kathleen Jenks, Ph.D:

"It should be noted, however, that to the people involved, these are not myths or stories.  They are real, not in a linear, literal, scientific sense, but nevertheless real, and part of the authentic plurality of  humankind's truths.

In this WebQuest, you will be looking at several creation myths from different cultures in order to answer the question, "Do creation myths influence the beliefs of a society?" You will also be looking at the common elements of creation myths. In your social studies class, you have studied the world's major religions and their beliefs and practices. You will now use that knowledge to read and interpret Indian, Chinese and Babylonian creation myths.
